Dead Time vs Alive Time

There are a couple of questions about time that have changed my life. Before I started asking these questions, I was not aware of how my days went by, whether each day was a success or not, and whether my time (and therefore, my life) was well spent.

After learning about these questions, I became more aware and in control of my time, I became truthful with myself, and I was able to assess my current trajectory and take action accordingly.

These questions were usually hard to answer honestly, but if I did answer truthfully, I always ended up a better person. These questions are:

  1. Would I pay someone my time's worth to live the past hour I have just lived?
  2. Is what I am doing now getting me closer to life or death?

Dead Time VS Alive Time

Robert Greene introduces the idea of Dead Time vs Alive Time, which is a way of thinking about the time when we are in complete control like when we have a weekend or a break, and when it feels like our time is controlled by external factors like when waiting in line.

Dead time is when we choose to watch a TV series on the weekend, alive time is when we spend the weekend in a creative endeavor. Dead time is when we go to Instagram while waiting in line, alive time is when we spend that time reading a couple of pages of a book.

🤔
What would happen to me in 10 years if I spent 4 hours a day doing what I did for the past hour? Will I be closer to life or death?
